Newport U3A has two walking groups: all day walks and half day amblers.
WEDNESDAY WALKING GROUP - ALL DAY WALKS:
We have a very successful walking group, with a good membership. Our walks are all day meeting at Evans Street at 9.30.a.m. There is availability for people who would like to share cars with a minimal charge towards the petrol.
Our walks are between 7 – 9 miles approximately through the beautiful Welsh countryside. Paths are usually well marked and leaders very responsible, having pre-walked before the day.
There is a coffee stop in the morning, packed lunch midday and usually a cup of tea stop in the afternoon. These breaks, make it a very enjoyable day out. Also if there is a historical feature in the walk, most leaders research it and a little talk is given at the appropriate place, which makes it very interesting.
The walkers celebrate a successful ascent of Pen y Fan - the highest mountain in South Wales.
If you are a new member, obviously you must be prepared for the terrain and weather, which means, a good pair of walking boots (preferably that don’t let the wet in) and wet weather anorak and trousers – as it does sometimes rain in Wales.
We have quite a few members who are now trained in First Aid, should the need arise. Training was given by the St.John's Ambulance team with lots of valuable information.
The walking programme is mixed, with some mountainous walks and some lower walks, which are not so strenuous.
If you feel this group is for you, please come along and join us, you would be made most welcome.

OUR ANNUAL WALKING HOLIDAY
Each year the group goes on a walking holiday - this year it was the Mendips.
Walking Group's Mendips Holiday, September 2016.
Sixteen took the plunge - although, unfortunately, one member actually did take a plunge whilst leaving the swimming pool and hurt their knee, no walking for them. However he (no names) did manage to enjoy sight seeing for the next four days.
The only other incident was a gigantic misunderstanding which left one of our members driving around Somerset and one nearly reported missing to the police. Turned out he was having a pint!! Definitely no names.
Oh yes, the walking was very good with our Leaders Sue and Graham showing us the best walks and views in the area. The highlight for me was on the last day climbing up Glastonbury Tor - what a view!
Food and service at the Webbington Hotel was very good so all in all I expect we will be off again on our rambles next year hopefully with no incidents.
There are no prizes for guessing who was having the pint!!
HALF DAY SATURDAY WALKS
We are a friendly group of walkers who meet at Evans Street every Saturday morning departing at 10 am for a half day walk in the beautiful South Wales countryside.
The walks vary in distance between 3 and 5 miles and cover a variety of terrain from the flat walking of the Canal, to the slopes of local mountains, fields and woodland.
Lifts can be provided for those without cars.
Come and join us if you like good walking and talking!
Please contact individual walk leader if you have questions regarding a specific walk

We meet every Saturday morning at the High Street end of Newport Market at 9.45 a.m. Do bring your bus passes as we access all our walks via bus routes.
The walks vary in distance and difficulty between three and five miles. Walking and wet weather gear is essential and we usually end our walk at a friendly pub or cafe for lunch (of course, this is optional).
Information about each week's walk is given out during the week prior to the walk, so if you are a new walker, do contact Margaret to find out the essential information.
