Frequently Asked Questions

What does it cost?
Currently this stands at (April 2009) £30.00 per year Membership, plus £1.00 per week "subs", per person. The one pound will allow you to attend as many groups in a week as you like: you could attend one group or nine, the cost remains the same.

How is it funded?
The U3A is a self-funding organisation that promotes learning for enjoyment. Each local U3A is independent, autonomous and self-funded by subscription and membership fees. Click here to go to the main U3A website and further information.

Can I "try before I buy"?
Yes. Everyone is encouraged to try a couple of groups for a week or so before paying their Membership fee.

What do I need to bring to the group?
Depends on the group you are attending. Stout shoes or boots are probably sensible for any of the walking groups, and pen & paper will be usually be handy for the languages. Click here to see the timetable and convenor phone numbers.

What are opening times?
The centre is in operation Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in "term time". Groups generally start at 9.45 or 10.00 and last for approx 1½ hours. The last group of the day will finish around 3.30 or 3.45.

Can I join the Committee?
Yes please! Each March there is a list on the notice board for volunteers from among the Members, and a vote is held at the AGM in April.

Where are meetings held?
Shaftesbury Street Church, on Shaftesbury Street, near Sainsburys.

Where can I park?
There is street parking nearby, Evans Street and off here. Please be a little sympathetic to the locals - we don't like it if people consistently park outside our doors, do we!

What if I join part way through the year?
Membership fees are proportional to the time of year that you join. If you join at the beginning, in April, then you will pay the full amount. If you join half way through the year, you will pay half, and so on. Once you become a member, then your membership will run from April to March.
