Art History

Meetings:   2nd & 4th Wednesdays, 1.00 - 2.30

The Art History Group has been running for about four years. We began by following a video course on Art of the Western World, viewing and then discussing each episode, in order to develop a general appreciation of the historical development of art. We then looked at some major individual artists in more detail, followed by a video course on The History of British Art. This was followed by a series of talks by one of our members on the Arts and Crafts Movement and on Art Nouveau.

This term we are looking at women artists, and after that we will begin studying sculpture.

We also make visits to galleries and other places of interest. During 2011 we visited galleries and historic buildings in Bristol, Bath and Birmingham. We plan to return to the Bristol Museum in April to visit a touring exhibition of Leonardo drawings.

The group welcomes anyone with an interest in art history or art appreciation. Our levels and areas of knowledge vary widely - the key to enjoyment is interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, and we seek to use our varied perspectives to learn from each other.
